Introduction
Beryl Cook’s joyful paintings celebrate everyday life with humour and heart, depicting lively pub scenes, hen nights, and seaside outings. Her bold, bulky figures and vibrant palettes, inspired by Stanley Spencer, won UK audiences in the 1970s. An OBE recipient, her classless appeal endures in galleries like Plymouth and Glasgow.
Biography
Born on 10 September 1926 in Egham, Surrey, Beryl Cook left Kendrick School, Reading, at fourteen without formal art training. She began painting in her thirties in Rhodesia, producing her first work, Hangover, in 1960. Returning to Plymouth in 1965, her self-taught style gained fame through a 1975 exhibition, cementing her as a beloved British artist.
